Faces of Tawang, NorthEast India

The Monpa people in Tawang, Arunachal, North East India

Unfortunately weather wasn’t good for the 10days I was in Tawang, it was cold and raining all day. But I enjoyed the food and the friendly people.Visited to a nearby village where the friendly chief invited us while talking to him in Tawang main street.

Back to Shillong

back to Shillong, Meghalaya, northeast of India, going to visit the only living root bridges in the world , the wettest place in India or in the world so claimed the Indians (they seem to claim a lot of things), the cleanest village in India. Just completed my Arunachal Pradesh leg of this trip.

Quick wrapup on Arunachal

Completed this part of the trip to Arunachal Pradesh, Northeast India. The permit was for 1 month. cost Us$50 + $20 travel commission.
Places visited : Via Tezpur in Assam
Diriang, Tawang, Bomdila, Itanagar, Ziro, Aalo (Along) , Mechuka, Daporijio, Yingkiong, Pashighat. Varied climates, tribes, landscapes. Amazing place, visited I had more time to do some longer hikes to places where the roads are not built yet.

Here in Arunachal Pradesh

arrived in Along, or the new name Aalo, this is the area of Adi and Galong tribal people. Traditional villages with pretty modern people, and famous for their hanging bridges. Spent today in the market and hanging out with the old Adi ladies selling tribal stone bead jewellery. Went crazy and bought some necklaces for sg$50, choose some beads and got them to make it for me. Planning to walk to the various villages which will take around 10km each way. Kinda like it here, good vibes will spent a few days here.

Weather wise not so great, rained with grey and cloudy weather. Humid but on good side not so hot, a little cool. Quite a lot of mosquitos and other bugs since this is jungle region.

My favorite lady in Ziro Valley

Arunachal Pradesh in North East India .
Ziro Valley.
Apantani Tribe.

It is the planting period for rice paddies. I was lucky to be there for the 2 weeks of planting and manage to walk around the huge paddyfield of ziro valley. It consist of 7 villages sharing the valley. Beautiful ladies and very friendly, sharing their rice beer, call ‘O’ and their precious rice and food with me.
What I got from this all, is how hardwork growing rice is. Just missed the pre harvest festival call Myoko in the month of March. The weather in Ziro valley climate wise, is average 18-20oC. Cool, and bug free unlike the rest of the plains of Arunchal Pradesh where mosquitos and other bugs rule.

About the Tattoo and nose plugs, it came about when another tribe, call Nishi were taking Apantani women as brides because of their reknown beauty. Indeed most of the young women I have come across are pretty good looking with fair complexion.

The Apantani women (above 50 years or older) wore tattoo and nose plugs at the age of 8 or pre-puberty age to prevent the warning Nishi tribe from taking them. This practice was stopped around 1980s when a compaign organised by student unions called for a ban in such practice.

ED : Apantani women wear nose plugs made of charred bamboo.
Their local religion is call Doni-polo which is shared with other tribes like Adi, Nishi as well.

In Itanagar – capital of Arunachal

departed from Tawang on a very lovely day after 7 days of horrid cold rainy weather. Long Bus ride to Itanagar, capital of Arunachal Pradesh, heading to Ziro in the morning. The City is NOT impressive. Looking forward to East AP for next 20days

Completed Tawang

completed, Dirang 3 days, Tawang 7days, stuck here coz of elections, jeeps on election duty apparently. bad cold rainy weather for whole week in Tawang, not really great for photos, had a few fun adventures. Nice place to get stuck than in Dirang.
